On August 6, 1945, the US dropped an atom bomb nicknamed "Little Boy" on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, killing between 130-150,000 men, women and children. (From an in-process artist's book called The Bomb: Growing Up Nuclear.)
Hi Lynn, been to Hiroshima and stood in front of the A dome. Absolutely in awe of their ability to turn this act of war and destruction into a message of hope and peace. Have you been there too?
Haven't, Robyn, but I got a bit obsessed back in high school about the fact that my country had done this (twice!) and haven't ever un-obsessed over the intervening years. I realized my daughters didn't really understand what it was like to grow up "in the shadow of the bomb," so decided to do an artist's book about it. It's been in process for at least a year, who knows if I'll ever finish.....!
