Exhibition News

The Northwest Collage Society's summer show, called "Collage Squared," is currently on view at the Kenmore Art Gallery in City Hall, Kenmore, WA, through November 8, 2018.  All pieces are 12" x 12" square and mounted on deep wood panels with black sides.  The exhibit is lovely and the grid hanging is quite striking, well worth a visit.  I have two pieces hanging:

"Buttoned Up"

"Every Atom in Our Bodies Came From an Exploded Star"

Also opening this week, is the online exhibition of the National Collage Society, featuring some great pieces from all across the country.  Go here to see it.  NCS, thanks for including two of my pieces.

I've been lost in a Trumpian dystopia...

Back from a summer of delightful frivolity, and I felt obligated to complete another political book.  It was hard to work on (being forced to think about the meaning of Trump for hours while I worked...) but the book is done!  Rah, rah.

''Whither" is a unique altered book, 30 page, 12"h x 9"w.  The original book was a libretto for the rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar," oddly appropriate to the subject matter.  Materials include book and magazine scraps, an American flag, tissue paper, pigmented, rubber stamped images and spray paint.  Here are the beginning pages:

More images are posted on my Flickr account, if you're interested.

Just Another School Shooting...

Will America...(Lynn Skordal, 2018)

Majory Stoneman Douglas High School, FL (2018), 17 killed, 14 injured.
Marshall County High School, KY (2018), 2 killed, 17 injured.
Rancho Tehama Reserve, CA (2017), 4 killed, 3 injured.
Umpqua Community College, OR (2015), 9 killed, 9 injured.
Marysville Pilchuck High School, WA (2014), 4 killed, 3 injured.
Santa Monica College, CA (2013), 5 killed, 2 injured.
Sandy Hook Elementary School, CT (2012), 26 killed, 2 injured.
Oikos University, CA (2012), 7 killed, 3 injured.
Northern Illinois University, IL (2008), 5 killed, 17 injured.
Virginia Tech, VA (2007), 32 killed, 17 injured.
West Nickel Mines Amish School, PA (2006), 5 dead, 5 injured.
Red Lake Senior High School, MN (2005) 7 killed.
Columbine High School, CO (1999) 15 killed, 24 injured.

This is not an exhaustive list, and there were many other school shootings between Columbine and now.  Each time we wail and cry and fly our flags at half mast and do ABSOLUTELY nothing to try and prevent the next school shooting.  O, beautiful for spacious skies, for an AR-15 in every American fist...

A Little Bird Told Me

I am all settled into my new town and my new studio, and here is my first artist's book for 2018.  "A Little Bird Told Me" is a unique altered book created from a thin Hallmark poetry book.  White ravens have been added to the covers.  The interior was gutted and replaced with an accordion structure created by printing images from vintage snapshots onto tea bag papers, enhanced with collage.

Crows have been observing humans for thousands of years.
Oh, what secrets they could reveal!

Traci Timmons, Librarian of the Dorothy Stimson Bullitt Library at Seattle Art Museum, writes from time to time about artist's books, and she has used one of my works as her subject in a recent blog post.  She's a wonderful and thoughtful writer, and it is a GREAT pleasure to be the focus of her latest blog article.  Please visit the blog (here) and for goodness sake, get yourself over to SAM to view the outstanding Wyeth exhibit before it leaves town later this month!

Exhibition News

Two collage pieces are travelling to Kentucky this week -- never exhibited in Kentucky before, would love to go visit!  The Lexington Art League has been holding its annual figure exhibition for more than 30 years, and this year the theme is "Brutal Beauty."  I'm proud to contribute two moderately brutal paper collage pieces to the exhibition, which will be held January 26 - March 11, 2018, in Lexington Kentucky.
