A Couple Recent Collage Exhibitions

The National Collage Society recently (November 4 - December 7, 2019) mounted its Annual Juried Show in the Cummings Gallery at Mercyhurst University in Erie, PA.  I am honored that my collage "Mother" was included:

On exhibit locally, is my piece entitled "What Is." as part of Read Between the lines: NWCS and Cancer Lifeline Poets."  The collages in this exhibit were inspired by poems written by writing groups organized by Cancer Lifeline in Seattle.  My piece was inspired by a beautiful poem written by Sylvia Byrne Pollack entitled "Higher Education."

Dear Mary Is On Her Way To Decatur

Each year there is a lovely showing of artist's books presented by the Decatur Arts Alliance in connection with the Decatur Book Festival in Georgia.  This year's show, entitled "The Book As Art: Boundless," runs August 19 - September 30, 2016, at the Decatur Branch of the DeKalb County Library, and will include Dear Mary, an accordion-style artist's book created from a 1931 college yearbook and nine vintage college photographs which I altered with hand-embroidery, beading and appliqued fabric scraps.  The only text in the book are the messages that were handwritten to "Mary" by each of her fellow students at an unnamed college in Waterloo, Iowa.

A couple more exhibitions in the waning days of summer...

Two collage pieces will be on view at The Studio Door in San Diego, CA, as part of "Endangered," an exhibition of artwork about the beauty of endangered and threatened species or habitats, running from August 5-28.

Exhibition News: The Crow Show

The Studio Door in San Diego is getting ready to open "The CROW SHOW 2016: A Celebration of Black Birds" in San Diego, CA.  Two of my collage pieces will be included -- Baby Wings & Our Pet Crow offers two collaged cabinet card photos of intriguingly odd children mounted as a diptych on the cover of an 1897 early reading primer, and The Corvid Benevolent Society Album includes collaged cabinet cards of ten bird-loving members of an imaginary Corvid Benevolent Society (their motto: Menti da Lucem, Manibus Corvus, or "light in the mind, crow in the hands"), mounted on the pages of a restored Victorian-era celluloid photograph album. 

The exhibit runs from February 5 - 28, 2016.

We Go to SF to See Something Fun

My good friend Robert Jackson is opening an exhibition in San Francisco at the Robert Tat Gallery, 49 Geary Street, Suite 410, near Union Square, December 5, 2015 through February 6, 2016.  The exhibit is called "Vernacular Vixens: Found Photographs of Women" [greatest title ever?] and it features vintage photographs of women, including press photos, double exposures, snapshots, negative prints, color images, etc., all drawn from Robert's enormous and fascinating collection of more than 11,000 found American photographs.  It will be wonderful...you should go, too!

Exhibition News, Winter 2015

Several pieces are winging their way eastward and southward for upcoming exhibitions, including:

Our Family, a refurbished Victorian photo album with collaged antique cabinet cards, will be included in "BLOOD QUANTUM," an exhibition of book and paper arts appearing at 23 Sandy Gallery, Portland, OR, November 6 -- December 19, 2015.

Mother, a multi-media collage pieces that includes paper, watercolour pencil, beads, hand-cut lettering and pigmented wax, will be on exhibit November 6 - 24, 2015, at Habitat Gallery, Denver, CO, as part of "The Best of..." exhibition.

And, finally, Dear Mary, an artist's book featuring embroidered vintage class photos, is headed to Philadelphia, PA, to appear in an exhibit entitled "Old Enough To Know Better," which is sponsored by the Women's Caucus for Art, Philadelphia Chapter, at Crane Arts Gallery 109, November 1-28, 2015.

Off to Saginaw

Erin case has curated a collage show for the re-opening of the Counter Culture gallery in Saginaw, MI.  The exhibit includes work by 14 American collage artists and will present a wonderful variety of work from a pretty fabulous group of collagists.  I mailed off four collages a couple weeks ago (see them below)...or go to Saginaw and enjoy them all! Summer Exhibits

Several collages and a couple artist's books are spending the summer on exhibit, including:

Beneath the Skin (Julli) is on display at the annual "Real People" exhibit.  The exhibit runs August 7 - Sept. 28, 2015, at the Old Court House Arts Center, Woodstock, IL.

Angels in America (No. 4) will be on display as part of the "Brand 43 Works on Paper Annual National Juried Exhibition."  The exhibit runs Sept. 26 - Oct. 30, 2015, at the Brand Library Art Gallery in Glendale, CA.

Three altered books, Grand Rapids 1937, Open Water, and Smoke, have just arrived in South Dakota.  They will be on display in the University Libraries at the University of South Dakota as part of "Bound and Unbound III, an International Juried Altered Book Exhibition," August 24, 2015 - January 4, 2016, in Vermillion, SD.

Exhibit News...Horizontal Grandeur

Every summer brings the annual "Horizontal Grandeur" exhibit at the Stevens County Historical Society & Museum in Morris, MN.  This annual exhibit is inspired by an essay written by Minnesota poet/writer Bill Holm about the prairie, and only artists who live in states with prairies are eligible to submit for jurying...an unusual but fun requirement that caught my eyes a couple years ago because it didn't seem to include anyone from my home state -- Washington.  We have beautiful prairies in the eastern half of this state, separated from the rocky, wet, western side by a jagged line of dramatic, snow-covered volcanic mountains.  So I began entering to "represent," and here are the two pieces that are off to Minnesota this year to appear in this wonderful, quirky exhibit.

Two Lovely Local Exhibitions

I'm honored to have pieces in two very lovely exhibits in the Puget Sound area this month:

In Tacoma, WA, you will find the Fifth Annual Puget Sound Book Artists Members Exhibition showcasing a wide variety of beautiful artist's books.  The exhibit runs from June 4 through July 30, 2015, at the Collins Library on the campus of the University of Puget Sound.  You can see the on-line catalog here. and most especially for bestowing the 2015 Curator's Choice Award on Smoke. This is a book I wasn't sure anyone would want to exhibit as I was making it, so this award is tremendous validation for me....huge thanks!

Also showing through June 28th is "Adornment," the 2015 Spring Show presented by the Northwest Collage Society in the Community Education Gallery of the Bellevue Arts Museum in Bellevue, WA. I have two pieces in this show and was thrilled to have been recognized with the Eleanor Woltees Smith Memorial Award for Medusa, and the Juror Award from juror Michael Monroe for Birth of Stars.

To the Birds

I have bird-related pieces appearing in two different shows for the next couple months.  There always seems to be room for a bird or two...

Patric Stillman and The Studio Door in San Diego, CA, have put together an intriguing exhibit called "The Crow Show," which includes a variety of pieces in different media featuring crows.  My pieces include an artist's book I titled 16 Ways of Looking at a Blackbird, and a collage piece called Clarice, Raised by Crows, Was Ashamed of Her Human Face. You can see other pieces from this exhibit here.

In mid-March, an exhibit called "Arte de Avian" will open at the Tubac Center of the Arts in Tubac, AZ.  The exhibit celebrates "the beauty and spirit of birds and bird-watching," and will include two of my bird-ladies:
